Sustainability Spotlight: Pela

Eco-Friendly Phone Cases & Sunglasses keeping our oceans plastic free.

From creating the first compostable phone case to interlacing an eco-friendly mindset into the fabric of who they are as a company, Pela is changing the landscape of this industry.

When companies take initiative and attack the status quo, barriers are broken down and this leads to a higher adoption rate of these new technologies. Thus, leading to a healthy Earth and populations of every species that share these lands and waters.

Why?

‘Here at Pela we have a big, hairy audacious goal.  We want to create a waste free future.

We believe that the technology exists to make everyday products without everyday waste, it just takes the right company with the right community to make these products the new normal. This is why we are developing products made of environmentally sensible materials. To educate and inspire the global community of people who are committed to making a positive impact on our planet. Put simply, we believe in better.

“We are the people we’ve been waiting for.”

Origin Story

This all started with Jeremy Lang, our founder.  He saw first hand the damage plastic was doing to our oceans while on family vacation in Hawaii in 2010.  Jeremy had the courage to spend years experimenting with new materials to try and find an alternative to plastic that could be used in everyday products. Our Values

It’s one thing to have a strong mission and purpose, it is another thing entirely to create and nurture the team and community required to make this waste free future a reality. This is why we created our core values.  To help us and our community stay the course. These are the 4 “C’s” we’ve curated.  We hope they mean as much to you as they do to us.

Community

Commit to a culture that builds a vibrant community.

We want to play, have fun, and laugh together.  We want to engage in meaningful debate, to have the right conversations so that we can create value for ALL of our stakeholders.  We call this ‘taking care of the whole’. Everything we do together must be good for us as individuals, as a team, as a business, for our community and ultimately for our planet. There is no planet B.

Creativity

Foster creativity to inspire innovation.

Better is born from creativity.  The only reason things are the way they are is because other people made it that way.  Which means with a little bit of creativity we can make things better.

Consciousness

Live with awareness and consciousness of the impact of our choices.

We are mindful of the impact of even the smallest decisions. We are grateful for both the opportunities and the challenges we face. We are humbled by the lessons learned in both wins and losses. We are concerned only with what’s right instead of who’s right.

Courage

Embrace courage by taking action despite uncertainty.

To disrupt traditional ways of thinking and challenge the status quo, you need courage.  It allows us to accept that we don’t know everything, but we’re willing to learn and try the seemingly impossible.

Meaningful impact is made when you are willing to tackle bold initiatives in which there is a chance of failing.  Coming out with a black eye doesn’t mean we are weak, it means we were not afraid to take a shot at something worth doing.

“We will rise up through our children.”

The World’s First Compostable Phone Case Working For Plastic FREE Oceans

Did you know there are more than 1 BILLION plastic phone cases sold EVERY.SINGLE.YEAR?

We trust plastic to protect our beloved mobile devices from drops, drips, and all other types of danger…Unfortunately, plastic has become a big problem in our world.  The image below shows 60,000 plastic phone cases being thrown out because they no longer fit the current phone models. This happens EVERY. SINGLE. YEAR!

What used to be a revolutionary innovation has mutated into a never-ending disposal problem that’s polluting our oceans and putting the lives of wildlife (and humans) at risk. That being said, it’s tough for us to do anything about the plastic that already exists…but we CAN make more responsible choices that stop putting plastic into our environment.

And that is why more than 100,000 people have already decided to support Pela Case.

Pela is the World’s First 100% Compostable Phone Case

Yes, you read that right.  Pela case will return back to the earth gracefully when you’re done with it.  All you have to do is throw it into a back yard compost and it will biodegrade!

Pela is also a member of 1% for the Planet, donating to worthwhile causes that keep our oceans and coastlines clean and healthy!

Pela Case is one small step on the journey to a plastic-free world, and more than 20,000 people are choosing to join the movement every month!

When companies choose to innovate and attack current issues and stand for a cleaner planet, I am all for shouting them out and helping them grow. Taking this initiative is huge and I hope you choose to join this movement and get away from the dangers of plastic.

Interesting tidbit: major use of plastics in society were not introduced to the mass markets until 1939, the start of World War II , as a focus on preserving our natural resources was at an all time high. Amazing that this has now caused other issues likely unforeseen in the past…it is up to us to stop this trend and create a more sustainable future.

Thank you for reading! Let me know if you have a Pela case and what ideas you have to stop the flow of plastics and improve our recycling systems and waste management.

Jenna, thank you so much for introducing me to such an awesome company! Props to you!
